The Tax and Budget Update 2012 will again be a critical event this year. The significant changes on medical aid, credit, employee insurance, SITE and severance, will all be dealt with specifically in the context of remuneration and payroll professionals. There are, of course, plenty more changes and new best practice information which will be shared. Our dates are 28 February 2012 in Cape Town, 29 February in Durban and 1 March in Gauteng. Please make your reservation as soon as possible as last year’s event was over-booked. .

This year again promises to be a full agenda and Jerry Botha will cover, amongst other things, the following:
  • The Budget 2012 impact on the remuneration and reward profession, with specific focus on any issues pertaining to employee tax and social security.
  • The 2011 Tax Amendment Act which was only promulgated in GG34927 on 10 January 2011, which introduced significant changes for 2012. It should be noted that many provisions in earlier drafts of this Act have been significantly changed, so make sure you come here the latest treatments.
  • Find out the impact of Medical Aid Credits on employees, how this works, who will benefit and who will be worst off, and how to communicate this to employees.
  • The position on employer provided disability (PHI) has now been enacted, exactly as predicted last year. Come find out why you have no tax exposure, but you need to get your compliance in order.
  • There has been section 11(w) changes and the “deduction concept” has been dropped.
  • The position of approved and unapproved life cover will be addressed. Find out the impact of the SARA submission on the legislated change and the criteria you need to consider for optimum decision making. Also, if you use the Sunday Times of 22 January as your source of information, we recommend that you compulsory attend, to make sure you get the complete and correct picture.
  • Get the latest on the pension fund law changes including the proposed 22.5% and R200,000 capping – to allow you to give latest feedback to your business, including what actions to take now and where to be cautious.
  • The phasing out of SITE can leave many employees in an adverse position – find out what to communicate.
  • Come to grips with the new Severance / Retrenchment tax treatments – employees are paying either a lot more or a lot less tax!
  • EMG members will be given overview of the January 2011 update on the Guide on the Taxation of Foreigners Working in South Africa, clarification on the deemed disposal rule when becoming non-resident, housing tax directives.
  • We will cover the anticipated 2012 tax amendments, including the Tax Administration Act, high-level changes in payroll practices, the latest case law on employees’ tax and SARS approach, deal with everyday employee tax problems and just give you an all-round good update.
With the anticipated legislated cycle we are entering, including preparation for NMI and social security, it will be critical for members to stay abreast of latest developments and best practice. We encourage members to get all the information needed in one session. We will also give brief feedback on SARA events and initiatives the coming year.

MORE ABOUT THE SPEAKER


Jerry Botha started his career with MacCorkindale & Holton where he qualified. He later returned to South Africa where he headed-up individual tax at KPMG and then moved to Deloitte where he left as an Associate Director.

During his time at Deloitte, he started specialising in matters related to remuneration. He now operates his own niche practice and works extensively on employee tax, package structuring, long term incentive schemes and alignment of employee remuneration with personal financial planning.
